Highlands of Bolivia and the Atacama Desert

Bolivia - Chile

12days-11nights

Day 1 – Welcome to Bolivia

Your hosts will meet you at El Alto International Airport today, just 30 minutes from downtown La Paz. We encourage you to take it easy today as you adapt to life at almost 3700m above sea level! In the afternoon, your guide will visit you at your hotel to check in and go over the program and answer any of your questions. If you are up to it, we'll take a light walk around the city center before you get a good night sleep! Free evening.

Day 3 – La Paz – Achocalla Valley – La Paz

This morning we will pick you up at about 10:00am and accompany you to the valley of Achocalla, about 45 minutes from downtown La Paz. Your destination is Flor de Leche, a small producer of fine cheeses and yogurts and a key actor in local efforts to keep the agricultural production alive near the city. After a tour of the factory you will enjoy a delicious lunch.

Included: Breakfast, lunch

Day 5 – Copacabana – Sun Island

The Sun Island is one of the most productive agricultural areas in the region, due to the relatively high level of rainfall the island received. Today you will hike across the island, observing the pre-Colombian terraces and the farming families at work cultivating for themselves and for many of the cafes and restaurants found on the island. You spend the night on the island and after dinner, you are encouraged to step outside and take in the starry skies.

Included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 6 – Sun Island – Santiago de Okola – La Paz

You complete your time in the Lake Titicaca region with a visit to Santiago de Okola, a small village 1.5 hours by ferry from the Island of the Sun. You will cross the lake after an early breakfast and take a guided tour of Okola before sharing a very traditional "apthapi" lunch with local farmers. After lunch you'll have some free time to walk along the beach, hike up the Sleeping Dragon or participate in a weaving workshop. You return to La Paz on the evening.

Included: Breakfast, lunch

Day 7 – La Paz – Uyuni Salt Flats – Tahua

Today you head from La Paz to Uyuni, gateway to the Uyuni Salt Flats and the key quinoa producing lands of Bolivia. You spend the night at the base of Volcan Thunupa in a hotel made of salt and will hold a discussion group on farming in the region and the explosion of the quinoa markets in the north.

Day 9 – Cayara – Potosi – Sucre

The valleys around Potosi were critical farmlands for the miners and their families working in the Cerro Rico silver mines. You'll take a walk around the farm and buildings this morning, before departing to Potosi for a surprisingly "active" soup and a walking tour of the city. You then continue on to Sucre, passing through the spectacular, multi-colored landscapes of the Frailes Mountain Range.
